December 2003

  • In December 2003, PKF’s national hotel sample achieved a 43.8% occupancy level, an increase of 1 percentage point in occupancy from December 2002. Provincial occupancy increases occurred in Newfoundland (up 6.5 points), British Columbia (up 1.8 points) Prince Edward Island (up 1.6 points), and Ontario (up 1.1 points).
  • The December 2003 average daily room rate for hotels tracked by PKF was $106.76.
  • Revenue per available room for PKF’s sample increased by 2.4% to $46.76 in December 2003 compared with $45.66 in December 2002.

November 2003

  • In November 2003, PKF’s national hotel sample experienced a decline of 0.2 percentage points in occupancy from November 2002. Provincial occupancy increases were reported in Newfoundland (up 3.5 points), Nova Scotia (up 3 points) and British Columbia (up 2.4 points). Decreases in occupancy occurred in Yukon (down 5.8 points), Manitoba (down 2.2 points), Quebec (down 1.5 points) and Ontario (down 0.8 points).
  • The November 2003 average daily room rate for hotels tracked by PKF dropped by 1.1% from November 2002 to $104.55.
  • Revenue per available room for PKF’s sample decreased by 1.4% to $58.85 in November 2003 compared with $59.69 in November 2002.

October 2003
  • In October 2003, PKF’s national hotel sample experienced a decline of less than 1 percentage point in occupancy from October 2002. The most significant provincial decreases in occupancy were reported in Quebec (down 3.7 points) and Saskatchewan (down 3.1 points), while increases in occupancy were reported in Newfoundland (up 4.8 points), Nova Scotia (up 3.5 points) and Manitoba (up 1 point).
  • The October 2003 average daily room rate for hotels tracked by PKF dropped by 1.2% from October 2002 to $111.60. Increases in average daily room rate were reported in the Yukon (18.5%) and Saskatchewan (7.0%).
  • Revenue per available room for PKF’s sample decreased by 2.4% to $71.43 in October 2003 compared with $73.17 in October 2002.

September 2003

  • In September 2003, PKF’s national hotel sample experienced a decline of 3.4 points in occupancy from September 2002. The Yukon reported an 8.5 point increase in occupancy while the most significant provincial occupancy decreases were reported in Alberta (excluding Alberta Resorts at 5.7 points), Quebec (5.8 points), Manitoba (3.9 points) and Ontario (3.6 points).
  • The September 2003 average daily room rate for hotels tracked by PKF dropped by 2.3% from September 2002 to $118.83. While Ontario experienced a drop of 6.7% in average daily room rate, notable increases were reported in the Yukon (10.6%), Newfoundland (6.1%) and Saskatchewan (4.6%).over the same month in 2002.
  • Revenue per available room for PKF’s sample decreased by 7.0% to $79.98 in September 2003 compared with $85.98 in September 2002.

August 2003

  • In August 2003, PKF’s national hotel sample experienced a decline of 5.7 points in occupancy from August 2002. The most significant decreases in occupancy were reported in Ontario (7.9 points), Quebec (8.4 points) and Alberta (excluding Resorts 7.4 points).
  • The August 2003 average daily room rate for hotels tracked by PKF dropped by 4.6% from August 2002 to $121.26. Ontario and Quebec experienced decreases of 8.4% and 6.2% respectively, while increases in average daily room rate were reported for the Yukon (6.9%) and Saskatchewan (4.6%).
  • Revenue per available room for PKF’s sample decreased by 11.5% to $87.72 in August 2003 compared with $99.10 in August 2002.

  • In July 2003, PKF’s national hotel sample experienced a decline of 7.1 points in occupancy from July 2002. Significant decreases in occupancy were reported in Ontario (11.1 points), Quebec (9.2 points), Prince Edward Island (6 points) and Saskatchewan (5.6 points), while increases in occupancy occurred in Yukon (6.1 points), Manitoba (4.7 points) and Newfoundland (1 point).
  • The July 2003 average daily room rate for hotels tracked by PKF dropped by 4.9% from July 2002 to $121.37. However, provincial average daily room rate increases were experienced in Saskatchewan (6.2%), Yukon (4.9%) and Nova Scotia (3.1%).
  • Revenue per available room for PKF’s sample decreased by 14.1% to $80.45 in July 2003 compared with $93.65 in July 2002.

  • In June 2003, PKF’s national hotel sample experienced a decline of 8 points in occupancy from June 2002. Decreases in occupancy occurred in most provinces with the most significant provincial occupancy decreases experienced in Ontario (12.4 points), Alberta (excluding Resorts – 10.2 points), and British Columbia (4.6 points).
  • The June 2003 average daily room rate for hotels tracked by PKF dropped by 5.5% from June 2002 to $119.96. However, provincial average daily room rate increases were experienced in Prince Edward Island (7.7%), Yukon (5.7%) and Saskatchewan (4.4%).
  • Revenue per available room for PKF’s sample decreased by 16.0% to $75.71 in June 2003 compared with $90.17 in June 2002.

May 2003

  • In May 2003, PKF’s national hotel sample experienced a decline of 6.5 points in occupancy from May 2002.Decreases in occupancy occurred in every province with the most significant provincial occupancy decreases experienced in Ontario (10.6 points), Alberta (excluding Resorts – 7.9 points) and New Brunswick (7.6 points).
  • The May 2003 average daily room rate for hotels tracked by PKF dropped by 3.3% from May 2002 to $110.72.However, provincial average daily room rate increases were experienced in Saskatchewan (4.4%) and Yukon (3.9%).
  • Revenue per available room for PKF’s sample decreased by 13.1% to $63.57 in May 2003 compared with $73.19 in May 2002.

April 2003

  • In April 2003, PKF’s national hotel sample experienced a 7.3 point decline in occupancy from April 2002. Decreases in occupancy were experienced in almost every Canadian market tracked by PKF but the most significant provincial occupancy decrease occurred in Ontario, down 12 points.
  • The April 2003 average daily room rate for hotels tracked by PKF dropped by 3.6% from April 2002 to $104.67. However, provincial average daily room rate increases were experienced in Saskatchewan (5.6%) and Nova Scotia (4.1%).
  • Revenue per available room for PKF’s sample decreased by 15.1% to $55.88 in April 2003 compared with $65.83 in April 2002.

  • In March 2003, PKF’s national hotel sample experienced a 1 point decline in occupancy from March 2002. The most significant provincial occupancy increases occurred in Prince Edward Island and Yukon (both up 7.4 occupancy points). Conversely, the most significant occupancy decreases occurred in Alberta (down 5.3 points) and Manitoba (down 4.5 points).
  • The March 2003 average daily room rate for hotels tracked by PKF was up 0.6% from March 2002 to $108.97. The most significant provincial average daily room rate increases were experienced in the Yukon (12.1%), Saskatchewan (9.0%) and Nova Scotia (7.9%).
  • Revenue per available room for PKF’s sample decreased by 1.1% to $61.74 in March 2003 compared with $62.40 in March 2002.

January / February 2003

  • In January 2003, PKF’s national hotel sample achieved a 46.9% occupancy level, a 2.5% increase from January 2002. The most significant provincial occupancy increases were reported in Ontario (5.4%), Saskatchewan (4.6%) and Quebec (4.0%). February 2003 occupancies increased to 56.7%, an increase of 0.8% over February 2002.
  • The national average daily room rate for hotels tracked by PKF was up 3.0% from January 2002 to $108.21. February 2003 results were up 1.9% over the previous year to $110.57.
  • Revenue per available room for PKF’s sample increased by 5.6% from $48.02 in January 2002 to $50.71 in January 2003. February 2003 results increased to $62.65, 2.8% higher than February 2002.
