year to date results for 2002

NATIONALLY, hotels tracked by PKF experienced a 1.4% decrease in occupancy for year to date 2002 from the same period in 2001. The average daily room rate, however increased by 0.8% to $117.35, which resulted in a Revenue Per Available Room (REVPAR) of $75.49, a 0.6% decrease from year to date 2001.

ATLANTIC CANADA RESULTS - The Atlantic provinces experienced a 1.0% overall increase in occupancy and a 4.7% improvement in average daily room rate, which resulted in a 5.7% increase in REVPAR. Increases in occupancy were experienced by New Brunswick (3.5%) and Nova Scotia (0.5%) compared with the year to date figures from 2001. Average daily rates increased in all Atlantic provinces, most notably in Newfoundland, which reported a 6.7% increase from year to date 2001.

CENTRAL CANADA RESULTS - Year to date results for Central Canada showed hotels tracked by PKF reporting a decrease of 2.6% in occupancy over the same period in 2001. The average daily room rate for Central Canada made an improvement of 1.0% to $122.45 over 2001. REVPAR in Central Canada decreased 1.6% over year to date last year. Ontario hotels experienced a 3.3% decline in occupancy for year to date 2002 while Quebec properties reported only a slight decrease of 0.4%. Average daily room rates increased in Quebec (4.0%), however Ontario reported a 0.2% decline. Occupancy performance was led by Montreal Airport (71.3%) while the highest average daily room rates were achieved in Downtown Toronto at $162.07.

WESTERN CANADA RESULTS - Overall occupancy in Western Canada properties decreased by 0.3% for year to date 2002. Properties in Western Canada reported a 0.2% increase in average daily room rate however; lower occupancy percentages produced a 0.2% decrease in REVPAR. Most Western Canada Provinces experienced increases in occupancy with Manitoba (3.9%) and Alberta (1.8%) reporting the more significant improvements. Year to date results showed that Saskatchewan (3.9%), British Columbia (1.1%) and Manitoba (0.1%) all experienced increases in average daily room rate over the year to date figures from 2001. West Edmonton led occupancy performance (83.3%) while the highest average daily room rates were achieved in the Alberta Resorts at $213.29.
