first quarter results for 2001

NATIONALLY, hotels tracked by PKF achieved a 1.6% increase in occupancy for the first quarter of 2001 over the same period in 2000.  The average daily room rate increased by 5.7% to $107.45 and this resulted in a Revenue Per Available Room (REVPAR) of $60.75, a 7.4% increase over the first quarter of 2000.

ATLANTIC CANADA RESULTS – The Atlantic provinces experienced a 1.2% overall decrease in occupancy but a 4.3% improvement in average daily room rate, which resulted in a 3.1% increase in REVPAR.  Hotels in PKF’s Prince Edward Island sample reported an increase of 9.2% in occupancy over the first quarter of the previous year.  Newfoundland properties followed with a reported 7.2% increase in occupancy.  Both Newfoundland and New Brunswick showed an increase of 6.9% in average daily room rate over the same quarter last year and Newfoundland experienced the highest REVPAR increase for Atlantic Canada at 14.6% to $48.33 compared with $42.17 in 2000.

CENTRAL CANADA RESULTS – First quarter results for Central Canada showed hotels tracked by PKF experiencing an increase of 2.0% in occupancy over the same period in 2000.  The average daily room rate for Central Canada improved by 6.4% to $111.59 over 2000 and REVPAR was 8.6% higher than 2000 at $63.64.  Quebec hotels reported a 2.2% occupancy increase for the first quarter of 2001 while Ontario properties experienced an increase of 1.9%.  Improvements in average daily room rates were experienced in Quebec (7.1%) and Ontario (6.2%).  Occupancy performance was led by Toronto Airport (72.8%) while the highest average daily room rates were achieved in Downtown Toronto at $141.49.

WESTERN CANADA RESULTS – Overall occupancy in Western Canada properties rose by 1.8% for the first quarter of 2001 to 56.8% over the same period in 2000.  Properties in Western Canada achieved a 5.0% increase in average daily room rate and a 6.9% jump in REVPAR.  However, hotels in Manitoba and Saskatchewan experienced a 4.3% and 5.3% decline in occupancy respectively, while occupancy increases were reported in Alberta (4.4%) and British Columbia (2.7%).  First quarter results showed that all Western Canada provinces experienced increases in average daily room rate over the first quarter of 2000.  Occupancy performance was led by the Whistler Resort Area for both occupancy (81.0%) and average daily room rate ($271.47).
